Faculty, staff invited to Integrative Pain Management open house on Wednesday

The WVU Medicine Center for Integrative Pain Management (CIPM) was recently formed to explore a variety of non-pharmacological therapies in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.

The WVU Medicine community is invited to attend an open house at the new center on Wednesday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is located on the second floor of the WVU Medicine Pain Management Center, located at 1075 Van Voorhis Road, near Applebee’s.

According to Stephen Hoffmann, MD, vice president of clinical programs, the center’s focus is to develop better methods of treating pain amid a national opioid epidemic, which has hit several communities in West Virginia particularly hard. “Medical data supports the effective use of non-pharmacological therapies in the treatment of acute and chronic pain,” he said.

Still in its early stages of development, a network of CIPM providers is working to fight the trend of opioid prescriptions for pain. The center is building programs that will be adaptable to communities that are battling opioid abuse.

The CIPM is integrating services in a wide variety of areas, such as:

  • acupuncture
  • addiction services
  • chiropractic
  • massage
  • mindfulness
  • movement therapy
  • nutrition
  • psychiatry
  • psychology
