School of Medicine announces new Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

Clay Marsh, M.D., WVU Health Sciences vice president and executive dean, recently announced the formation of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in the School of Medicine, effective January 1, 2017. Vinay Badhwar, M.D., Gordon F. Murray Professor and executive chair of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, will serve as the department’s founding chair.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve our proud institution in this manner,” Dr. Badhwar said. “The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery will integrate cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgical disciplines in a renewed and unified focus on scholarship and education, while continuing our intimate collaboration with the Department of Surgery and the Divisions of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Medicine. We will together look forward to furthering the WVU mission of providing enhanced access to the most advanced technologies available for all West Virginians.”

The department will be comprised of three divisions. Badhwar will serve as chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery, Luke Marone, M.D., will serve as chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery, and Ghulam Abbas, M.D., will serve as chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery.
