WVU’s Head Basketball Coach Bob Huggins Visits Island

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Head Basketball Coach at West Virginia University Bob Huggins made a stop in Hilton Head, S.C., Thursday (May 24) for a visit with Palmetto Chapter Alumni and Friends at Port Royal Country Club.

The future Hall of Fame coach was relaxed as he told some stories and answered questions about the program from the more than 120 fans in attendance. He was introduced by long-time friend and former South Carolina Coach Bobby Cremins.

At the end of the reception, Chapter President Eric Magnin had an important announcement.

“When we learned Coach Huggins was coming to the Island, we wanted this reception to be more than just a social event. We wanted it to be meaningful and relevant. So, our Chapter members raised close to $19,000 for a charity Bob set up to honor his mom, Norma Mae, who meant the world to him and who passed away several years ago from colon cancer.”

The gift will go to the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund, a fund established through the WVU Foundation, that has surpassed 3.5 million dollars in contributions at WVU’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer.

WVU’s Palmetto Chapter is 200-plus members strong. The organization sponsors a scholarship for a South Carolina student to attend WVU each year, and supports local charities like Bluffton Self Help, Volunteers in Medicine and other worthy causes. Regular game watches and social activities are held at Callahan’s Sports Bar. Visit us on Facebook #palmettomountaineers or on the Web: www.palmettoeers.com
