Dr. Anjlee Patel of WVU School of Medicine Charleston Campus Awarded Distinguished Teacher and Attending of the Year Awards

Anjlee Patel, MD MBA, assistant professor of pediatrics at the WVU School of Medicine Charleston Campus has been honored by faculty and students with the “Distinguished Teacher Award.”   Announced in the Fall, the award was presented to Dr. Patel during the recent WVU School of Medicine ceremony.

Established in 1986, this award is given annually to recognize and reward exceptional teaching and/or innovation in teaching methods, course and curriculum design, and instructional tools. A principle criterion is that the nominee should be considered to be among the very best teachers, at any rank, in the School of Medicine. The selection is made by a committee of faculty and students. The committee solicits nominations, and reviews supporting documents in making the selection. The winner is also the School of Medicine nominee for the University Distinguished teaching award.

Dr. Patel was also recognized by residents at Charleston Area Medical Center with the “Attending of the Year Award.”  The fully accredited residency program is jointly directed by the West Virginia University Charleston Campus and Charleston Area Medical Center.   The award was voted on by all pediatric residents and was award at graduation ceremonies earlier this month.

Dr. Patel is a member the WVU Charleston Campus’s pediatric team in the cardiology section in providing academic support to the WVU medical clerkships and CAMC residency programs, as well as patient care in the WVU Physicians of Charleston Pediatric Specialists office.   She most recently achieved her board certification in adult congenital heart disease.  This accomplishment adds to Dr. Patel’s current board certifications in pediatrics, pediatric cardiology and internal medicine.

“Dr. Patel is certainly a very valuable member of our team with outstanding contributions to our academic and clinical missions.  These awards are a testament to her, as well as her impressive achievement in passing the adult congenital heart disease boards last year is now providing important contributions to the adult cardiology fellowship program.  We are fortunate to have her on our team,” said Raheel Khan, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at WVU’s School of Medicine Charleston Campus.

“This is truly an exemplary university wide recognition, and Dr. Patel very much deserves our appreciation and acknowledgment,” said John C. Linton, PhD, ABPP,  Associate Vice President for Health Sciences at WVU Charleston Campus.  “Clearly her residents and students value her dedication and talent.  For a main campus academic honor for teaching to be awarded to a regional campus faculty member is nationally very rare, making her recognition all the more distinctive.”

As the junior faculty recipient, Dr. Patel joins senior faculty members Dawn Hunter, PhD, Pathology, Anatomy & Laboratory Medicine and Joel Yednock, MD, Medicine as MD Degree Program Award conferees.
