New exhibit by pathology staff creates 3D art exhibit combining beeswax and photography

Honeybees, photography and a blowtorch—that’s all Dana Gray needs to create her art.

A new exhibit of the same name by Gray, grants administer in the West Virginia University Department of Pathology, Anatomy and Laboratory Medicine, combines photography and encaustic painting—the art of painting with heated beeswax mixed with colored pigments.

“I fuse layer after layer of wax and pigments over my landscape prints,” Gray said. “The wax completes the photograph by adding dimension, luminosity of color and texture, allowing me to finish creating the story in my mind that a photo alone can’t tell.”

The exhibit opens Monday, June 3 at the Health Sciences Library, and runs through August 31.
