Video remote interpreting service available

WVU Healthcare has contracted with Stratus for video and audio interpreting services that will assist with American Sign Language, low English proficiency and international language patients.

Using Stratus Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), an application to use with a computer, iPad or mobile device, WVU Healthcare providers can access a trained medical interpreter on demand in American Sign Language or more than 200 international languages.

VRI is more user friendly and efficient than WVU Healthcare’s previous system, said Jan Manilla, director of Risk Management, Patient Relations and Supportive Care. The system also helps the organization remain compliant with ADA and other regulatory requirements. It debuted in November.

“So far people love it,” Manilla said. “I have had nothing but positive feedback from it.”

Manilla encourages staff to undergo training on the system and its protocols. To schedule a training session or for more information, contact Manilla or Sherry Jackson.
