WVU Charleston Surgeon Ali F. AbuRahma elected vice president of Society for Vascular Surgery

CHARLESTON W. Va., July 23, 2019 – Dr. Ali F. AbuRahma was elected vice president of the Society for Vascular Surgery at the association’s annual meeting in Maryland. With this new position he begins a three-year term of service that advances to president-elect and then SVS president.

Dr. AbuRahma is a professor of surgery, chief of vascular and endovascular surgery and director of the vascular surgery fellowship and integrated residency programs at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine Charleston Campus in Charleston, W.Va. He also serves as the medical director of the vascular laboratory and co-director of the Vascular Center of Excellence at Charleston Area Medical Center.

He has served on the executive board of the SVS for three years, as well as on the SVS Foundation board of directors, the executive committee and the document oversight committee. Most recently he served for three years as secretary of the SVS executive board.

“I am honored to join the SVS leadership team as vice president,” Dr. AbuRahma said. “As a society we have so much work to do to advance the role of vascular surgeons in the U.S. and abroad. For many reasons, our specialty has not kept pace with the patient load and as our population continues to increase in size and age, there is a dramatic increase in the predicted vascular workload in the future.”

Originally from Jordan, Dr. AbuRahma earned a United Nations scholarship to study medicine at Alexandria University in Egypt, where at age 22 he was the youngest student and the top student in his graduating class. Upon graduation he was awarded the State Prize of Egypt. He completed residencies at Alexandria University Hospital, the State University of New York and West Virginia University, Charleston Division.

He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and has published more than 265 articles, 200 abstracts, 108 book chapters and eight textbooks in vascular surgery (seven in noninvasive vascular diagnostics and one vascular/endovascular surgery combat manual).

His latest textbook is Noninvasive Vascular Diagnosis: A practical guide to therapy, 4th edition.
